Your original post was so good that it inspired me to write something more articulate than my usual blather, in order to clarify my own thinking on the subject, and to counter some of your arguments (and I did say "attempt" to counter - I did not, and do not mean that as an attack on your intelligence or on the thoughtfulness of your own comments)
