Getting to Know You...

gakked from [livejournal.com profile] majrgenrl8.

The effortless meme (on my part, at least):

I know very little about some of the people on my friends list.

Some of you I know relatively well. Some I know very well; one or two of you I even know in RL.

Some of you I hardly know at all. Perhaps you lurk, for whatever reason. But you friended me and I thank you for your interest in my words.

But here's a thought: why not take this opportunity to tell me a little something about yourself? It can be any old thing at all. Just so the next time I see your name I can say: "Ah, there's so and so...they listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips." I might feel compelled to mock your musical taste, but I'll certainly remember you.

I'd love it if every single person who friended me would do this. Yes, even you people who I know really well. Then post this in your own journal and see what gems of knowledge appear.

I think I would, actually, listen in rapture to the love-music of she-turnips.

I have two middle names.

According to the template going around, my gangsta name is Strawberry Flipflop.

My last name is Irish but everyone thinks it's English.

Both sides of my family have a Family Mole. I got my mom's. My sister got my dad's.

Hmm I don't know what to say that you don't know! Most of my journal is pretty . . . explanatory.

So I guess I should say something . . . Uhhh . . . I'm really excited for Aliens vs Predator to come out, even though it promises to be even worse than the first.

That's all I can come up with now.

I only read about 75% of the comics I buy and I buy about six issues every week. I would never admit this to my mother.

When I was little, I wanted to be a farmer because it would give me an excuse to dig in the dirt and be surrounded by sunflowers.

I grew up in a rural area in New York State. There are people certain I've told them I grew up in New York City, and others certain I've told them I grew up in a small town.

I have grey-blue eyes.
My middle name is "Anne".

[identity profile] intertext.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have grey-blue eyes too! And my middle name is Winifred, which I used to think was awful until I watched Angel :)

I used to think being a farmer would be wonderful. I still think being a professional gardener would be better in some ways than what I do.

Wow. That's a lot of comics :) What's your favourite?

I've traveled to five continents, but never learned to drive. (Funnily enough, I don't think I'd ever counted the continents before. Europe, Africa, South America, North America, Asia. I suppose I should try for Australia some day, but the thought of spending that long on a plane daunts me.)

[identity profile] intertext.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
Why Aliens vs Predator? Kelly and I are stoked about "Atonement" - maybe that shows you what sad literature geeks we are :)

[identity profile] intertext.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Actually never mind the middle names, I'm not even sure what your first name is - is it really Cat?

I have the family left foot :) And a hole in my right ear that isn't a piercing!

And the love-music of the she-turnips appeals to me, too :)

[identity profile] intertext.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
How to be mysterious about your background :)

[identity profile] intertext.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I envy all that travelling. I've only been to three out of those five, and would like to try and catch you up :) I know what you mean about the long plane trip to Australia, though!

It was all work-related -- observatories and university campuses, mostly, which I suppose is an improvement on the airports and hotels most people get for business trips -- but I did get to do a bit of sightseeing too. When it comes to vacations, I prefer to stick close to home.

If I'm walking alone (or with just my dog), there's a 50-50 chance I'm telling myself stories, thinking out the details in my head. (If I'm not, then I'm either just mulling over life and problems, or enjoying the landscape.)

I'm leaving the same comment on all of these.
I am a pretty good cook when I bother to cook, but usually I am too lazy. Even more rarely practiced -- I am an excellent baker.

Going up ladders makes me feel ill, but I love hill-walking.

I used to think of myself as a gadget freak; yet three years ago, when I wanted a "proper" camera, I went backwards and bought a second-hand film SLR; and have since bout a second body and several more lenses. The more I use it, the more I like it.

I did the round trip from Toronto to Melbourne four times in eight weeks. I should have been given a jetlag medal.

I can wiggle my ears independently, and roll my stomach in a way that's considered quite amusing/gross (according to taste) if you draw a face on it in felt tip first. Touching my toes, now, that's a different matter...

People at back East cons thought I was Patricia Hodgell. In fact so much so, Steve Brust once walked up and gave me a hug and asked "How're you doing, Pat?"

We do not speak of this.

Let me put it this way: my first name starts with a C, cannot in any way, shape, or form, be shortened to Cat, and suits me so poorly that back when I was trying to go by it people kept giving me nicknames. In college the first time, the two that stuck for more than a week or two were Penny and Cat, and although there are probably about half a dozen people out there who, if they saw me today, would shout "Penny!", Cat won. One of these days I'll get it changed legally. I use my initials or Cat professionally.

My birth certificate wasn't registered for over a month after I was born (Sept 16th, it was registered at the end of October). My mother wanted to name me Morgan and my father, who had shot his wad picking out a boy name, thought Dara was perfect, don't ask me why. My dad didn't want me to have a cool name and my mom thought Dara was horrible (correctly), so they argued until they picked a name they both hated, and then never called me it. (They call me by one of my middle names.) It's kind of a sore point because I grew up with this ugly name that people in the midwest can't pronounce and which doesn't suit me.

Although I think of myself as English, I'm technically more Scottish than English (although I don't think the concept of having "Scottish blood" is actually very meaningful.) I have already had my (Scottish) name mis-spelt in four different ways in Christmas cards this year.

I fear the music of she-turnips.
I still think of all the dogs (the one from when I was a kid, the one my parents have now, and the two my sister has in Windsor) as family.

[identity profile] intertext.livejournal.com 2007-12-19 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, that's something I didn't know about you before :) I know how you feel, because that's what I always felt about my middle name which I thought was dreadful. The irony is that it's for my Grandmother, and SHE never used it - called herself "Isabel" which I like quite a lot. I've never actually felt much like a Debbie, either, to be honest.
