Is there any way to turn off that handy-dandy new, so not improved system of publicizing what filter you are using?

No, but you are the only person who sees which filter it is - have a look at my most recent filtered posts, for example (two this week, you'll guess which.) - what you see there is what anyone on a filter will see.

It doesn't publicize to anybody but you.
You see a little yellow lock and the name of the filter in your posts, the rest of us just see the normal grey "friends-lock".
Take a look at my page if you want. I always use a filter to friendslock (even when the filter is "all of my friends").
