Tolkien Quotation meme

Quote from LotR when you read this (from [livejournal.com profile] tree_and_leaf appropriately enough)

"Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends."

and

Ithilien, the garden of Gondor now desolate kept still a dishevelled dryad loveliness.

and

And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed on into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.

(I'm weeping gently as I write this last bit, not only for the lovely treatment of it by Peter Jackson, but because I quoted the very last bit about the far green country in my mother's eulogy)

That last one is possibly my very favourite, favourite passage in literature, ever. I also love the following from Hopkins:

'O the mind, mind has mountains; cliffs of fall
Frightful, sheer, no-man-fathomed. Hold them cheap
May who ne’er hung there.'

O yes.

Oh, double poignance!

yes. yet despite the poignancy, or perhaps because of it, I love it :)
