Manga recs?

Okay - all you out there, do you have any particular recommendations for Manga? I want to try some, but am boggled by the choices... This is for someone who loves Diana Wynne Jones, Tolkien, Lois McMaster Bujold (to cite some representative faves)

I've copied this to the LJ of [livejournal.com profile] amidoh, who is one of our students and a friend of Rosi - and very knowledgeable about such things. Hope that's OK with you? If not, say the word and I'll delete it.

I'd recommend checking out [livejournal.com profile] coffeeandink's Memories, which include a lot of posts on manga, including recommendations.

Hi, I was directed here by [livejournal.com profile] gillo. So. Um. For the fantasy genre, it all depends whether you want more magical, such as faeries and winged girl warriors, or combat and demons and the like. For the former, you might want to try something by CLAMP - I'd recommend their Magic Knight Rayearth series, which has a nice mix of a fantasy world, magic and mecha suits. Another two series by Clamp you might want to try are Tsubasa Chronicles and CardCaptor Sakura - I haven't read either of them myself, but I have heard good things about them.

For something with more swordplay, there are series like InuYasha, which is demons in feudal Japan, or Samurai Deeper Kyo, which combines real historical events with demons and superhumans. Demon Diary is a good series to try, though there is some hinted malexmale. I like Descendants of Darkness, which is a mix of demons, vampires, gods and modern society, though it is can get quite gruesome. Ragnarok is a good series, based upon the Norse legend of the demise of the gods. It has dragons and valkyries and the like.

I hope I've helped narrow it down a little. There are so many good series out there. ^_^ Have fun reading.

Thanks, Amidoh! You've given me some ideas of places to start.
