"Alias"--I must know what this interest is about.

Oh! I'm a huge fan of the television series "Alias" - have been since the beginning. It's been one of my not-so-guilty pleasures, but alas is now finished, so I shall have to turn my penchant for popular culture somewhere else (right now it's watching Buffy on dvd).

I've not heard of this tv show--how old is it? I ask only because I am a vintage tv buff myself! We watched a lot of tv in my day. :D

Well, it only just went off the air (last episode was on while I was in England in May). It ran for 5 seasons! Lots of other LJ users are big fans - you'll see there are communities for it, just like for Buffy, Firefly etc. The current big hit "Lost" was created by the same guy who created "Alias" You'll find it on dvd, if you're interested.

Frans Bruggen? - unfamiliar to me.

You might notice that one of my other interests is "recorders" - ie the musical instrument. When I was in my twenties, I played quite a lot, quite seriously. At that time, Frans Bruggen was one of the two only famous recorder players who actually made recordings (the other was David Munro) and is probably still the most influential. Now, he mostly conducts.

Sea otters? Like them myself, admittedly, but why sea otters?

Well, like chickadees, they are adorable. They are also endangered. We have a local population that was decimated by the Alaska oil spill some years ago, but is starting to come back. We have river otters around here, too (that some people think are the same thing) but the true blue sea otters are just wonderful

I'll bite. Why old roses?



I got sidetracked looking. I realised I hadn't included one of my favourite authors.

Old roses - by which I mean the range of roses that date from up to several centuries ago, usually single species rather than the modern hybrid tea roses - are usually stronger, more disease resistant and smell better than the modern ones. They also have wonderful, evocative names. I have "Madame Alfred Carriere," "Zephirine Drouhan," and "Souvenir de Malmaison," which was believed to be a gift from the Empress Josephine to another European leader (a Czar, perhaps?).

Aaahhh, see , I was thinking of a different meaning of the word 'old'. Couldn't work it out. I've never been a big fan of roses (am allergic to many scents), so the reference eluded me. I will admit that some of the old standard roses are nice to look at, but I think many of them are a bit showy.

I did like your picture of the geranium in fence, must be the colour and the simplicity.
