Excellent, excellent points - all of them. And I certainly didn't intend to come across as elitist. I guess my "English prof" hat gets bigger sometimes - I can't help it!!
The whole Oprah's book club thing, and the Harry Potter thing (a related phenomenon), yes. I know Oprah has done a lot to promote reading. Partly I just try to get a dig in at her whenever I can, because I can't stand her, and see a lot of what she does as self-aggrandizement. But, yes - and as a teacher of literature, I should be thrilled by the book club phenomenon: people are reading, indeed!
And I read a lot of "junk," too, unashamedly. And write about it :)
