Come to that, I've met Jewish people who were perfectly aware of the religious meaning behind Narnia, but who loved the books. Pullman, otoh, seems to be wholeheartedly admired all the way through (I genuinely did like HDM very much indeed) only by dogmatic atheists. Perhaps it's novelty value? Or perhaps they enjoy the heavy handed church bashing?
I read 'Tom's Muidnight Garden', and liked it well enough, but I don't think I ever went to the length of getting it out of the library a second time.
