Anton uses a cattle gun, which shoots a bolt into the brain and is used to stun cattle (ideally, I think, to kill the brain but not the body) so they can be bled. The association of this weapon with killing by numbers, with efficiency, makes it extra horrifying.
We must also mention Anton's haircut--a masterful bit player that changes Javier Bardem's appearance more than I would have thought possible and adds a great deal to his terrifyingly impassive expression.
