I gather it's a starting point lesson for freshmen to introduce the concept of social class - all of the above are things that happen to a student because someone else has made a choice and/or had the money. That is, nothing to do withthe student's own choice or merit. It looks like an interesting discussion-starter, but it's certainly very American and aimed, I think, at people a little younger than us.
