(nablopomo 3) A friend from UVic asked "would you like to go play badminton"? This is not something that I'd ever considered doing, really, but I'm always up for a lark, so I agreed. We went to a drop-in session yesterday afternoon and it was GREAT fun. The irony is that my friend had to stop after one game because her neck was hurting, and I enjoyed it so much that I stayed for three. I was very tired afterwards but I feel okay today. This may become a regular thing, who knows! (I still haven't looked in my hip owner's manual to see if badminton is on the approved list; indeed I have a sneaking suspicion that it may not be...) Strangely, my hips and shoulders are pretty much okay, but my back is sore.

I'd say listen to your body, but be very careful. Minor muscle aches associated with exercising muscles in a new way are okay, but severe muscle and joint pain is not.

Glad you had so much fun. :)

Oh, badminton is fun! I haven't played in a long while, but I played drop in for a bit. If my schedule weren't so packed, I'd be tempted to check it out again!

Thanks. Actually, what you probably don't know (because it happened more than two years ago) is that I had a hip replacement because of severe arthritis. There are certain activities that I'm really not supposed to do, because of risk of damaging it. I have arthritis in the other hip too, so that will also be a factor...
So far, so good, however :)

Oh, my. No, I didn't know you weren't dealing with the original equipment. So, definitely, you should follow the instruction from your doctor. Did they give you a user's manual? (I'm being slightly facetious, but only slightly, since as a technical writer I'm a great believer in user's manuals.)

I hope that all continues to go well for you and I'm very glad that you were able to enjoy yourself so thoroughly in such a physical way. You must really treasure that ability, given the circumstances.

I also enjoy badminton, and you should get in touch with Simon, because I know he loves a good badminton match.

Yes, indeed. I never cease to be grateful that I can walk at all, and actually I'm able to do much more than that. When I mentioned my "hip owner's manual" I _wasn't_ in fact being facetious - I've got one!

Well, maybe sometime when you're not so swamped, we could try it out!

I hope it's not wrong for me to admit that the technical writer part of me is very gratified to know you have a "hip owner's manual," even though I am sad that you need one.
