As of yesterday, I'm on holiday until June 1. No big deal, you think? Well, this is the first real holiday I've had for ... maybe 10 years? I can please myself, set my own timetable - no work to prepare, noone to look after (except, of course, my dear dogs...).

So, what am I going to do? Work in my garden, get my house in order and... maybe ... a trip to England. My mum wanted her ashes taken to her home village, and I'd like to be able to do that this year. At the end of June, I'm having my hip surgery and will be laid up pretty much for the rest of the summer. So. I'm scouting for cheap fares, and may make a quick trip at the end of May. I'll keep you posted.

I hope you enjoy the holiday...

Out of curiosity, which English village did your mother hale from ? I don't suppose it's one I know, but I'm curious...

Roydon, in Essex. She was born in "The Old House" which is a National Trust property now, I believe that village's only claim to fame :) My grandfather and an "aunt" -one of my mother's sisters who died of diptheria as a child - are buried in the churchyard there; my grandmother had her ashes taken there, and that's where my mum wants to be.

Oh, that would be lovely, [livejournal.com profile] gillo and [livejournal.com profile] oursin! If I make it, it will probably be in the middle of the month: definitely before the 24th, because I have to be back at work on June 1. I will _definitely_ keep you posted. And I'm actually thinking I'd stop for a few days in London before heading north...

You sound like you're really ready to lay your mum to rest. Good for you. I know so many people who keep remains for a long while before putting them where they're supposed to be.

Hopefully it won't be too painful to travel, with your hip and all. Good luck!

I'd happily join up for a group plan, since you may be so oblinging as to visit during the only part of May for which I'm going to be in London too. (14-25, I think.)

Oh cool!!! Then it's settled - I'll make my arrangements accordingly :) Now if Air Canada would just be obliging and have a nice seat sale...

My half-term break starts on Saturday 27th, but I'm not much more than an hour by train from London, so could come down any evening before that given enough time to work around the leaving do things for my students. Unless you fancy a side trip to Warwickshire? Stratford? Plays?
