I suppose I started reading things like The Other Victorians and The Worm in the Bud more or less soon after they came out, just out of general interest, plus I was also reading the feminist stuff on history and sexuality, and then I came across the letters to Marie Stopes and realised that there was a whole lot there that the existing historiography had not only neglected but in many cases got dead wrong. So I signed up to do a PhD and the rest is, er, history.
