I was walking across campus on my way back from class yesterday and ran into a colleague of mine whom I hadn't seen for a while. She told me she was heading to her "farewell lunch" because she'd been laid off.

She's a lovely person and her work is absolutely stellar. I am bummed beyond words, really.

Reason why tenure is essential #345. It worries me that it seems to be less and less common.

Yeah, a few really great people have been laid off here, too. It's really saddening.

Oh that really is too bad. Truly there's not enough value placed on scholars or artists or teachers or top athletes...actually there's not enough value placed on most vocations, with the possible exception of businessmen.Sigh.
