Neil Gaiman has just won another award for The Graveyard Book. What next? The Booker? The Pulitzer Prize? The Nobel? I mean, he's a lovely man, and TGB was a nice book, but, come on, honestly, all you readers out there, there ARE other books and other authors...

Books are starting to look depressingly like the Oscars, when it comes to awards. ONE book gets an award and that means somehow that everyone else has to stop thinking and give their awards to the same book. Saves time. It' s like when an Oscar winning movie cleans up EVERYTHING on the night - as though if it gets the nod for one thing then it has to gather in all the minor awards too.

Like I said. Saves time.

That's true. But I can't help thinking that NG has really done an amazing job of branding himself. And he's been on EVERY talkshow and featured in EVERY magazine. You'd start to think he was the only sf/fantasy author working today if you didn't know better.
