Inspired by gillo. I've done one of these before, but got quite different choices this time, so it's quite fun to do it again.

LJ Interests meme results

1. books:
   Well - books. I own thousands of them (probably literally). Couldn't live without them. They've defined my life from early childhood.
2. community colleges:
   An interest from my job and my vocation: teaching. And I respect community colleges over Universities because colleges respect teaching over scholarship without sacrificing scholarship...
3. early music:
   When I was in my early twenties I played baroque recorder quite seriously (in a consort) and I still love the music. Telemann, Corelli, Byrd, etc.
4. gardening:
   This is where I go for peace, quiet, beauty. I pull weeds to help get over personal sorrow, and get solace from the flowers and wildlife in my private piece of paradise.
5. julie czerneda:
   A Canadian sf writer whom I like a lot. Anyone who can invent plump little aliens with feathery eyebrows and them imagine them playing hockey... The third in her latest series should be out any time soon - can't wait!
6. metafiction:
   A highbrow way of talking about fiction that's about fiction. It turns me on, for some reason; I just enjoy that "postmodern" kick of self-consciousness in art - Jeanette Winterson, Michael Ondaatje, James Joyce...
7. old roses:
   That's one aspect of my garden; I have about 23 different varieties of roses, and more and more of them are a century or so old. Madam Alfred Carrier, Gloire de Dijon, Souvenir de Malmaison - just the names are evocative, never mind the scent and the colour...
8. postmodern fiction:
   Well, like metafiction. Just so happens that I did my dissertation on Jeanette Winterson, and I like the things she does with fiction. I like "softer" pm stuff - not the real cynical hardcore things like _Giles Goatboy_ and so on. See metafiction.
9. steeleye span:
   Their "Parcel of Rogues" album was one of the first real albums that I bought for myself as a teenager. I just loved their rocky folk sound - electric guitars and Maddy Prior's pure voice.
10. tolkien:
    What can I say. Ursula le Guin wrote that Tolkien is one of the people that she's read so many times that she's lost count, and I could say the same thing. I grew up with TLOR, and still love it, and still read it despite the movies (love the movies, too).

Interesting that books dominate for you as they do for me. I have a cousin we stayed with once, many years ago, when my grandfather had his eightieth birthday. After an hour alone in the house, for reasons now sunk in the mists of time, Dave and I realised what was making us uncomfortable. There were three - yes, three books in teh entire house. How can anyone choose to live like that?

yes, for me books and gardens are the crucial things (and dogs). I can't imagine a life or a world without books - but have known people, as you describe, with either no or few books in the house. Or people who don't keep books - "oh, I've read that, why would I want to keep it?" - I can't imagine not thinking of beloved books that you've read many times like old friends...
