I bought a new camera on Friday. It was an indulgence, but I have been saving up for it, and I've been having a tough go of it this past few months - no, I'm not going to talk about that in here, but take my word for it! So I think I deserve it, and I'm going to enjoy spending the rest of the summer playing with it. Here's a sample - my cat Clio (named after the muse of History, not the Disney character, who in any case spells it differently).

She thinks I've put far too many pictures of Those Horrible Hairy Creatures in here - she knows, anyway that she's vastly superior to them; can't you tell?

This afternoon (being Sunday) I'm going to plant phase three lettuces and other salad greens and probably pull more weeds. A nice veal casserole, with tarragon and lemon, is simmering in the slow cooker so as not to have the oven on (summer has finally arrived in what has so far been cool and grey Victoria) and will be eaten with new potatoes and asparagus later. I'm reading HP6 slowly, with pleasure so far.

She's really pretty. I don't have a digital camera *yet* and I haven't found my scanner in the moving boxes *yet* so I can't post any pictures of my little cat, Major.

Where (in literature, I assume) did you find your dogs' names?

Heh, well, actually, Cholmondeley (pronounced, of course, the British way, Chumley) just seemed like a good name for a Beardie. It came to me when I knew I was getting him and was thinking about what would be a good name. Ditto Robinson - I had weeks to think of a name for him, as I met him when he was seven days old (he was a planned puppy, so to speak). There is a series of children's books about a teddy bear called Teddy Robinson, which might have been at the back of my mind, because Beardie puppies look a lot like Gund toys.

Interesting--I never would have gotten that pronunciation out of that spelling! My cat's name was the one he had. I assume it was given to him by the SPCA. What was so cool about my cat was that we saw his picture on the SPCA's website, and I thought he would have been adopted by the time we got around to adopting. But when we got there, he was sitting in his cubby, as though he was waiting for us. What also makes his name kinda special is that my partner is a Sergeant in the army reserve--so we ended up adopting a "military" cat who outranks him!

That's great :) Clio was an SPCA special, too, though I got to name her myself. She knew I was her person as soon as I walked into the cat room at the shelter; she came up to the front of her cage and rubbed her face on the door and chirruped at me. She was a bit taken aback to discover Cholmondeley waiting at home when she got here, but she's not too bothered by the dogs, even when they try to herd her.

I love it when there's a bond between animal and human even at the moment of adoption. I never had that with the other cats we had as a family. I'm glad I got to experience it this time.

Good to hear that Clio isn't upset by dogs. I don't know how well Major would do with them. He watches other neighbourhood cats through our windows (he's an indoor cat) and he wonders what the heck he can do about them!
