I appeal to the collective knowledge of the flist.

Today, while teaching Beowulf, I pointed out the bit that always amuses me about Grendel, where they say that not only is he a horrible monster and eats our warriors but he doesn't even have the decency to pay weregild!

A hand popped up, and one student asked the very sensible question - what would weregild consist of? In other words, what was the going rate for a warrior's life in those days? I had to confess that I didn't have the foggiest but would endeavour to find out. If necessary, I'll do some research (or at least try Googling it), but I figured that one of my esteemed flist might just already know, so... any takers?

Looking at the poster for the new Beowulf movie on Neil Gaiman's Blog, and thinking how it inexplicably looked like Lara Croft, then viewed the trailer and discovered that Angelina Jolie is in it, and seems, in fact, to be playing Grendel's mother (!!!) who somehow becomes, from what I can gather from the trailer snippet, responsible for giving Beowulf his power (!!!!!). Don't worry, I'm not going to rant. I find it vastly amusing. And I believe in some ways that it's actually okay for people to muck about with Beowulf. After all, it comes from an oral tradition, and got mucked about with by the Christians in the first place, so why not put the comely Angelina in it? You've got my vote :)
