Hip hip hooray!

I'm getting a NEW hip... better than before... Probably in June, maybe July depending on if I have to teach in May/June to make up for being off this term. It means that I won't get much of a holiday this year, but then a holiday wouldn't be much good in pain and hardly able to walk. NEXT year, there'll be no stopping me! Never thought I'd be so pleased at the prospect of having surgery. Yay!!!

oooh, that sounds scary. But I know the fear would subside with knowing it'll help your life. I remember my mom having to go for emergency surgery to remove her galbladder--she was so scared, but then I told her to think about not being in such pain anymore and she was okay!

I'm actually not scared at all (maybe I should be *grin*) The pain I'm in now gets pretty awful at times, and after surgery they give you drugs ha ha. I'm so into it, because my quality of life has been badly affected - normally, I walk miles and am pretty active; now I can't go for 10 minutes without sitting down, never mind any thoughts of day-hikes or walking tours or such like that I'd like to be able to do.

That's terrible that you've suffered so much in spite of an active lifestyle! I am so sedentary in comparison and have no troubles at all. My grand father does, but he did some awful jobs on the farm and laying railroad ties. My mom and her mom (and even great-grama when she was still with us) all have arthritis in their hands. I attribute that less to genetics and more to the fact that they were all clerks for their whole working lives. Mom actually has rheumatoid arthritis now because she fell from her horse and had a compression fracture in her lumbar region. She did that in 1999 and the long-term stuff is starting to show through. Sounds similar to your story--she would never have gotten this way if she hadn't been an active equestrian!

My boss's boss at an old job came into the office a week after his hip surgery, saying he already was having an easier time walking than he had for years.

I know what you mean ... I never thought I'd be disappointed at not qualifying for surgery for my back.
