My Garden in June

Now that I've been spending so much time in the garden, I'm ready to show it off a little. Here's what it looks like today, in a shot taken from my back deck. If you look very carefully, you'll see Clio-the-cat sitting on the path at the center left of the photo.

You are looking at alchemilla mollis (the green frothy stuff), perennial geraniums (the light pink and purpley blue clumps), japanese iris, a pink peony, Tiffany rose, centranthus (red valerian and a white one - the white frothy stuff). Obviously, I'm fond of frothy stuff. The orange rose in the background at the top right is "Royal Sunset" climbing variety, and if I could have just one rose that would be it. In the bed at the very top, the white mound is parahebe caractacus; at the very back are more geraniums, more alchemilla mollis (self sown), and you might just be able to make out an astrantia, pale pinky white in the top left. That bed is partial shade, whereas the main perennial bed is mostly full sun.

My photostream on Flickr is a riot of colour and shape. I now have a new "dream" garden: when my garden grows up, I want it to be Giverny. Quite the most beautiful public garden I have ever seen - absolutely breathtaking. And the village itself is charming. This was a highlight of my trip. For complete effect, please see my Giverny Set on Flickr. Meanwhile, see a sample behind the cut )

Windflower
Originally uploaded by Debbie G.

It was a lovely spring afternoon, and I was given an unexpected afternoon off from my usual meeting with friends for dog walking, so I took my beardies and the camera into the garden. I spent some time weeding, though the ground is still mostly too wet to do much. The boys came and snuffled at me companionably and padded all over the beds with their big fat furry feet.

I then spent a happy hour or so on my stomach, photographing the blooms. The results are behind the cut, except for the one you see here, the windflower, which is my favourite shot of the day.

erythronium macro

The dogs and I went to Thetis Lake for a walk this afternoon, seeing as, miraculously, it was not only not raining but the sun was shining. It was lovely to walk in the almost forest and smell the piney foresty smell and see the sun shining on the lake and through the trees. I was surprised - though I guess I shouldn't have been - to see carpets of "easter lilies" (erythroniums) and even some shooting stars. Last week's satin flowers are already starting to go over, so I'm glad I "captured" some shots of them. I managed to take a few nice shots of wildflowers today as well. The boys had a lovely walk and are now snoring at my feet as I write this.

All in all it has been a pleasant weekend - not overly productive in terms of prep or marking, but restorative.

satin flower 1

I took doggies for a walk at Cedar Hill Golf course this afternoon and found the satin flowers (sisyrinchium douglasii) blooming. So delicate they are and lovely - they don't last long, and often I have thought to myself "oh I must go and see if the satin flowers are blooming" and gone to the spot where they grow en masse and found nothing but their grassy stems and a few little dark purple shrivels to show where they've been. They are at their peak right now, so Victoria residents should climb the hill up the golf course on the west side from Finlayson and look to the right at the top and you'll see them on the rocks there. The big mass of them is further north, but that's my secret :)

... and here's a gratuitous photo of a bunch of flowers I picked from the garden just now. The garden is actually getting rather tired as the summer progresses, but I still have yellow loosestrife, some alstroemeria, alchemilla mollis (ladies' mantle), meadow-sweet, astrantia (this year for the first time in more than one colour), red and white valerian, lavender, veronica and butterfly blue scabious.
