It's actually from San Francisco, but ours is just as beautiful.

Oxford: A Spring Day

The air shines with a mild magnificence...
Leaves, voices, glitterings... and there is also water
Winding in easy ways among much green expanse,

Or lying flat, in small floods, on the grass;
Water which in its widespread crystal holds the whole soft song
Of this swift tremulous instant of rebirth and peace.

Tremulous - yet, beneath how deep its root!
Timelessness of an afternoon! Air's gems, the wall's bland grey,
Slim spires, hope-coloured fields: these belong to no date.

David Gascoyne

*whose post this morning sent me scurrying to find something that expresses spring and timelessness and humanity.  I think this does; there's also a personal connection, which she knows, as do some others of you.

It was a lovely spring day.  As I walked out today, I passed a young girl who said "it's like being in _Greece_ or somewhere!"  It was warm, mostly sunny, everything you might want in an Easter weekend day.

I have the luxury of no marking this weekend, so have a delightfully lazy few days.  I slept late, read the paper in bed, then took the dogs into the garden and worked for an hour or so.  Then walked down to  5th Street and met [livejournal.com profile] lidocafe for lunch, which was delightful.

Spent the afternoon once more in the garden, did a bit of cleaning, then had supper, now in my study looking up old photos and thinking about times past.

Henry the dog died yesterday.  Judith phoned me earlier to tell me; in the end they had him put to sleep at home.  I hold my two very close and cry a little - more than a little - thinking about him.  He was a dear, lovely dog, and will be greatly missed.

Windflower
Originally uploaded by Debbie G.

It was a lovely spring afternoon, and I was given an unexpected afternoon off from my usual meeting with friends for dog walking, so I took my beardies and the camera into the garden. I spent some time weeding, though the ground is still mostly too wet to do much. The boys came and snuffled at me companionably and padded all over the beds with their big fat furry feet.

I then spent a happy hour or so on my stomach, photographing the blooms. The results are behind the cut, except for the one you see here, the windflower, which is my favourite shot of the day.

The dogs and I went to Thetis Lake for a walk this afternoon, seeing as, miraculously, it was not only not raining but the sun was shining. It was lovely to walk in the almost forest and smell the piney foresty smell and see the sun shining on the lake and through the trees. I was surprised - though I guess I shouldn't have been - to see carpets of "easter lilies" (erythroniums) and even some shooting stars. Last week's satin flowers are already starting to go over, so I'm glad I "captured" some shots of them. I managed to take a few nice shots of wildflowers today as well. The boys had a lovely walk and are now snoring at my feet as I write this.

All in all it has been a pleasant weekend - not overly productive in terms of prep or marking, but restorative.

Happiness is a big stick

Today was a typical springy Sunday, soft, pleasant, just enough sun to make it worthwhile going out. I took the boys to the beach this afternoon, and spent a happy few hours snapping photos and enjoying the sunshine.

I took doggies for a walk at Cedar Hill Golf course this afternoon and found the satin flowers (sisyrinchium douglasii) blooming. So delicate they are and lovely - they don't last long, and often I have thought to myself "oh I must go and see if the satin flowers are blooming" and gone to the spot where they grow en masse and found nothing but their grassy stems and a few little dark purple shrivels to show where they've been. They are at their peak right now, so Victoria residents should climb the hill up the golf course on the west side from Finlayson and look to the right at the top and you'll see them on the rocks there. The big mass of them is further north, but that's my secret :)

This is just about the best month to live in Victoria. We can gloat at the rest of Canada - it's so beautiful here! I spent the afternoon in the garden, where crocuses, primroses, and anemone blanda are already blooming and everything is green and budding and the birds are hopping about tweeting madly. This morning I saw two squirrels roaring around in a kind of steeplechase through four backyards, chattering furiously the whole way. Whether this was a mating ritual or whether one had stolen the other's ipod, we'll never know... This afternoon I pruned my blue buddleia, tied back Constance Spry, or at least made a start - she's living up to her name and needs taking in hand - and tidied the corner under the forsythia bush. Right now, as I sit here, I can see a flock of bushtits on the feeder (I always think they look like flying tadpoles, but they're cute). All's pretty okay with the world.
