This is what I've been up to photographically. I thought I'd try the 365 project again (I lasted about three days last year). So far, I've done it. Here's January!

January! I can't believe I did a whole month

Tabitha Portrait at New Year

Taking a leaf out of [livejournal.com profile] heleninwales's book, I've decided to try the 365 day photo project on Flickr. This is #1 - my first photo uploaded for the year 2009.

One of the things I enjoy about participating in certain groups on Flickr is that it pushes my boundaries in terms of making me go out and take photos of things that I don't, normally. There's one that I'm in right now, it's a kind of Survivor with photographs, rather too complicated to explain, but the upshot was that today I had to go out and take shots of "wood (no trees)" and win a challenge with one of them so that I could add it to this ongoing collection of things for this Survivor game. So I went to a local lumber yard and wandered around and ended up having a great time looking at pattern and texture. My Flickr photo-stream is now full of "wood" shots. Oh, and I won my challenge - in fact, so far I've won three with them, and I'm idly continuing on to see how many medals I can win in this particular category.

wood study This one is my favourite, but you can see the others if you click through to my photo-stream.

While I wasn't looking, my Flickr site passed 25,000 views. 25,006 to be precise, at last login. And by an extraordinary coincidence, it's my Flickr "birthday" today. I uploaded my first photo on July 10, 2005. Here's what's on my homepage right now:

Chinatown Vignette

For those who know me in RL, this was taken on the day I had lunch with the grrrlz at M'Ole and we walked through Chinatown. I'm still uploading a few shots from that day.

(and if anyone saw this post the first time, when I referred to 25,000 as a quarter of a million - thank you for being kind enough not to point out that me brain iz ded)

Fellow Flickr-ites will know what this means. I'm excited, because it's my first Explore photo since January.

It also confirms my statement in my last post about the west coast of BC being pretty much the most beautiful place on earth.

Sunday morning, I woke early, and was out with Robinson by about 7:30, heading into the Saanich peninsula, where I took photos like this one )

This photo:

Topaz Park as Winter Wonderland

is going to be in a calendar! Denise Savoie, the MP for my area, is putting out one of those calendars that everyone gives away free at this time of year, and she picked my photo, from all the ones of my hometown on Flickr, to be the one for December! I'm very chuffed.

Today I found that I had twenty-five pictures in "Explore" - "Explore," for non-flickr-ites, is a page on which the site tracks the 500 most "interesting" photos in Flickr on any given day. "Interestingness" is measured in some way by how many views you've had, how many comments, by whom, and how many "faves." You can knock yourself out of Explore by posting your photo to too many groups or ones that force comments, or whatever. Twenty-five is the most I've ever had, so I'm dead chuffed.

Have a look )

Good Conversation
Originally uploaded by Debbie G.

Today I girded my loins and went to meet some fellow Flickr-ites at the "Frog and British Library" cafe out by the Bibliotheque Francois Mitterand. When I say "girded my loins" understand what the people who know me well know: I am almost painfully shy, and it is almost physically difficult for me to face a room full of people I don't know. But I knew that there was a Flickr meet-up today and at this place, so I thought "damn it, I'm going" and I went.

It was nice. Not wonderful, but nice, and I'm proud of myself for going. They were all charming and welcoming, but once my French dried up and their English dried up, is was a little awkward. But I made the effort, and I have some photos to show for it, and so far three five six new "contacts" on Flickr, which is very nice indeed.

Afterwards, I went to the Orangerie Museum and looked at Monet's Waterlilies, which were wonderful.

Ps: My French may be crap, but I'm not a crap photographer, anyway :)

This is a plug for the Flickr photo project A Day On Earth, in which photographers from all over the world submit one photo on one day. Check it out. There are some really great shots on the site, and it's interesting to see what people have chosen to submit.

...and somehow, I passed 10,000 views on Flickr while I wasn't looking!

new year violet

2005 was definitely the year of photography for me. The purchase of my Canon Rebel XT DSLR and the subsequent discovery of Flickr has re-energized an interest that I've pursued all my adult life, but only recently with such confidence and joy. It's been a lifeline in many ways, as have this journal and the contacts I make in these two fora.

Wishing all my LJ friends a peaceful 2006 filled with the rewards of friendship, love, pleasures (whatever they may be) and hopefully laughter.

draft horse
Originally uploaded by Debbie G.

I was invited to join a group on Flickr, "Your Single Best photo of 2005" and, after much thought, I chose this one. It didn't get as much attention in terms of views and "faves" as my two duck photos ("Robinson on Mountain" doesn't count, because I actually took that shot several years ago). But it's uncropped, and I think the light, the composition, the expression on the horse and just everything is perfect (if I do say so myself...)

My duck (see below) made page 21 of the "interestingness" page on Flickr for October 30! I really should be above all such competitive drives, but, hey, it's still pretty cool. It's the first photo of mine to have risen so quickly (I've had others rise slowly - "draft horse" hit page 10 for its day at its peak, but it took a while to get there).

Oh well, with that, back to marking...

I'm very proud to be taking part in a lovely project through the Flickr site, in which photographers from all over the world (literally) are posting photos they have taken today in a group pool there. All the photos will be blogged at adayonearth.org so you can go and see them. Look for the rainy day shot from Victoria Canada by "Debbie G" (that's me!) Because it was raining, I went out with my "second best" camera, my Olympus Camedia - not wanting to fry my Canon SLR digicam. It was quite fun to revisit my little point and shoot digi. This was another shot I took today that I liked quite a bit, but didn't include in the pool (I had to choose one only).

Joop was a happy, well-travelled fox terrier mix dog. He died of cancer yesterday. I never met him, but I saw dozens of photos of him on the Flickr site his human friend created. The beautiful image that commemorates his death had over 2 thousand hits and recieved more than 150 comments. You can go and visit the site and see Joop's photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/henk/

RIP Joop.
